How to estimate structural steel, step by step

A structural steel estimate is just a stack of honest line items: what the metal costs, what the labor costs, and what it takes to coat, ship, and stand it up. Build it from the takeoff up and the number defends itself.

This is the estimator's-eye sequence for pricing a fabrication job. It works whether you're doing it on paper, in a spreadsheet, or in dedicated software — the discipline is the same. The goal is a number you can walk a client through line by line.

The eight steps

  1. Take off the material

    Go through the drawings and quantify every member — beams, columns, bracing, plate — by shape and size, with a quantity and a length. Tag each with an item code (BEAM, COLUMN, BRACE…) so it routes to the right labor and finish later. This is the foundation; a missed member here is a missed member in the bid. Importing from a Bluebeam markup or a detailer BOM saves the retyping.

  2. Price the material

    Weight comes from the section (lb/ft × length × qty). Apply a $/lb per shape — different shapes and grades carry different mill pricing — and add a waste/drop allowance (commonly ~5%) for the stock you buy but don't ship.

  3. Add connections

    Connections are where light estimates go wrong. Account for the connection steel (clips, plates, angles — often carried as a percentage of member weight) and, just as important, the fit-up and weld hours those connections take. Moment connections and skewed/coped work cost far more labor than simple shear tabs.

  4. Estimate shop labor

    Two common approaches: by the piece (hours per member by shape and length) or by hrs/ton against a complexity band. Either way, multiply hours by your shop rate to get fabrication cost. See the hrs/ton benchmarks for sanity ranges.

  5. Add finish

    From the painted surface area, price paint/primer by the square foot or galvanize by the pound. Don't forget that misc metals and exposed steel often carry different (pricier) finishes than the bulk structural.

  6. Add erection and equipment

    If you're erecting, estimate field labor hours (hrs/ton by site difficulty) at your field rate, and price crane/equipment separately — crane days are a big, lumpy number you don't want buried in a per-ton figure.

  7. Add delivery

    From the total shipping weight, estimate loads and freight. Long hauls, permit loads, and multiple deliveries add up faster than people expect.

  8. Roll up the cost sheet and set the price

    Total every category into a cost sheet, apply overhead and profit, and — before you send it — divide by the tonnage and check your hrs/ton and $/ton against the benchmarks. If they're outside the band, find out why before the client does.
